Because of the rapid development of the textile and garment industry, several industry organizations urge the government to import 250000 tons of cotton.
The Brazil cotton producers association (ABRAPA) and the national cotton Exporters Association (ANEA) only asked the government to import 150000 tons of cotton two months ago, but now import demand has increased by 40%.
These associations require that tariffs be cut temporarily or abolished import duties between October and May. The Brazil Foreign Trade Bureau (CAMEX) will make a decision on this issue at this month's planning meeting.
If the government allows imports of so much cotton, it will be able to fill the gap in domestic cotton production.
Earlier, ABRAPA estimated that the shortfall of cotton was about 1 million 280 thousand tons, followed by an amendment of 1 million 70 thousand tons.
