Harroz (Harrods) increased consumption of Chinese tourists by 40% after installing 75 UnionPay consumer terminals in the first quarter of this year.

The company has introduced the China UnionPay payment terminal, so that Chinese tourists can use their UnionPay cards to directly consume credit cards in Harrods, including several personal pactions.


Ward told reporters: "the vast majority of Chinese consumers use cash, but this year we have two red wine pactions over 25000, and the other is diamond trading, and the single person pays 140000 by the Chinese UnionPay card payment machine."


Not only is Harrods installing terminal of UnionPay, it also installed four UnionPay terminals in another luxury department store Selfridges and Oxford street, and sales figures for Chinese tourists also showed a two digit growth rate.


Although sales of Chinese tourists continue to grow, Ward thinks it is too early to open Harrods in China.

"Before we really open a shop, we still have a lot to learn."


Harroz has hired 75 Mandarin speaking salesmen at Knights bridge's department store to provide Chinese shopping guide to everyday customers.

In addition, Harrods restaurant specially provides Chinese dairy products with no dairy ingredients to cater to Chinese consumers' eating habits.


According to the store statistics, Hermes is the favorite brand of Chinese tourists, followed by Chanel, LV and Dior.

Male consumers pay attention to watches, leather shoes and belts, while female consumers prefer to buy bags, shoes and brand clothes.

Some British style goods are also popular among Chinese consumers.


Harroz put a lot of striking signs inside the department store, telling Chinese tourists to spend money on UnionPay cards. Many young Chinese tourists came to visit the first day and found that they could spend with the UnionPay card for second days. They spent more money on UnionPay cards with good money, because they could return home with more gifts.


Research Institute McKinsey's report shows that 2/3 of luxury goods consumers are trying to avoid high inflation in mainland China.
