According to the data released by Statistics SA, sales volume of retail sales in April 2011 was 43 billion 458 million South African (calculated at the base price in 2008), up 9.8% from the same month last year, better than 5.3% in the previous month and 5.1% in advance forecast by Reuters. If the overall performance of the first quarter of this year is 166 billion 594 million yuan, the sales amount will grow by 6.7% over the same period last year.


In terms of major retail categories, sales of furniture and electrical appliances increased by 13.1%, showing a double digit growth rate for second consecutive months. Food, beverages and tobacco products increased by 6.6%, reversing the 5.8% decline in the previous month.


Family category increased by 8.9%, better than the previous month's growth of 6.9%. General sales increased by 7.3%, similar to that of the previous month.

Medical and health products increased by 13.7%, and the growth rate was much better than that of the previous 5.6%. Other categories of sales grew by 4.1%, less than 7% in the previous month.
