Australia

The competition and Consumer Council (ACCC) recently issued a safety guide for specific chemical substances in consumer products, limiting the concentration of 22 harmful aromatic amine compounds (banned azo dyes) and formaldehyde in clothing and textiles.

The publication of this guide indicates that Australia has officially restricted the above substances.

In Australia, the export enterprises of related products should be concerned.

azo dye

It is one of the most widely used synthetic dyes in textile dyeing and printing. However, some azo dyes are carcinogenic and can not be used in products with long term contact with skin.

At present, the product safety regulations of the European Union, the United States and some Asian countries prohibit the use of toxic azo dyes in textiles. Australia did not have laws or regulations to prohibit the import of products containing azo dyes before the publication of the guide, nor did any legislation limit the content of any harmful chemicals in textiles. It was the first time that the concentration of specific chemicals in certain consumer products was officially restricted.

The guide stipulates that the contents of harmful aromatic amines in textile garments with long term direct contact with the skin are not more than 30 mg / kg, and the formaldehyde content of various textile products is limited. The clothing for infants and clothing specially sold to people with sensitive skin is not more than 30 milligrams per kilogram, and clothing for skin contact does not exceed 100 mg / kg, and other garments or fabrics can not exceed 300 mg / kg.

For this reason, the inspection and quarantine department suggests that the relevant textile enterprises should have a correct understanding of the technical trade measures, and follow the laws and regulations concerning azo dyes and formaldehyde content at any time with the import and export countries, standardize production according to the standards of developed countries such as Europe and the United States, conduct standardized tests on all links from production to sales, only in this way can we fundamentally improve the quality of export products and enhance the competitiveness of our products in the international market.
